The only things you need to record your music at your house

Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all the absolute barebones essentials that you need in order to record music at your house. 

Let’s talk about it. 

All of the things you need to record music

So what happens is that there are a few things that you need in order to record music at your house. 

Here they are

1. A computer
2. Mixing speakers
3. DAW
4. Windowless room
5. Microphone, shock mount, and pop filter. 
6. Accessory cables
7. Any Instrument that you would want to include in your music

So what happens is that, it really is that simple to record music. 

You can actually purchase all of these items including the computer at your local Guitar Center.

Let me explain what some of these do. 

I’m not going to explain a computer

I’m not going to explain what a computer does because that’s self explanatory, like where are you going to record your music right? 

But let’s keep going

Mixing Speaker or Studio Monitors

So what these do is that they give us a true definition as to how our music sounds like. 

Because what happens is that most speakers nowadays are bass boosted. 

And Mixing and studio monitors are actually very flat. 

Thereby giving us the real sound of what we’re mixing and listening to. 

A set of good yet cheap recording studio monitors will run you about 250 per speaker. And you need at least 2 speakers to mix. One for your left side and one for your right side

DAW

A DAW is the software and sometimes hardware to a recording studio. 

It is the interface and the computer controls that we use to actually record music. 

It is super versatile and even the cheapest of DAWS are extremely powerful nowadays. 

I personally bought my first DAW with Interface and Headphones for 250 dollars. It also came with the microphone and stand, I had to buy the shockmount and pop filter myself.

In the computer, you install the DAW and all of the drivers associated with it and you use that program to record your music. 

Imagine having Word on your computer. Word allows you to write and record documents on your computer. 

Same with a DAW, a DAW allows you to record music on your computer. 

Windowless room

A windowless room and actually a doorless room, is what you need. 

So, In reality, this is impossible because there’s no such thing as a windowless and doorless room because how are you supposed to get in the room? 

But that would be the ideal room that you would need to mix and record music because the acoustics would be perfect. 

The room would also have to be a perfect box with nothing in it including the computer or mixing speakers that you would be working on. 

Again, I say that this is impossible, so I must also add that there is a reason why I am saying all of this. But I will explain it all the way at the end. 

Microphone, shockmount, and pop filter

So what happens is that when you’re recording voices on a DAW, you will notice in your recordings subtle yet hearable noises. 

And some of these subtle yet hearable noises can be eliminated with a pop filter and shock mount. 

So a pop filter will get rid of unwanted noises caused by the mouth, most of them anyways. 

And a shockmount will get rid of most noises caused by the ground. 

It actually stabilizes the microphone. 

You don’t need to use these tools except for the microphone on instruments, but on voices you will need to use them. 

Accessory cables and instrument cables

So when you’re recording your music, you will need different cables to plug in from guitars to interface, from interface to computer, from interface to mixing speakers, guitars to amps, etc. etc. 

So whatever is your setup, you will need to find the right cables for all of these things. 

Some of these cables can be hard to find, but most of them can be found at your typical Best Buy or Guitar Center. 

Any Instrument you would like

I personally have guitars at my house and keyboards. 

So you will have to learn how to mic and record those aspects. 

Now what do I use? 

I just use my Iphone, my voice and my guitars. 

So what happens is that back in the day, you needed most of those things to record music. 

But today, Technology has gotten so advanced that there have been people who have recorded platinum albums on their Iphones. 

So there is a saying that goes around and it is, “If you can do great with little things, then you can do great with great things.”

So don’t let the fact that you don’t have the best microphone on hand stop you from recording your platinum album hit. 

Go out there and work with what you got and record the music that moves people.
