Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some self-releasing tips for the Christian musician.
Let’s get started.
Use Tried and true methods
So what happens is that there are a lot of blogs out there that preach on the fact that a musician needs to find his own way into selling music.
And it’s true to a point, but the fact still remains that in today’s landscape, there are similar patterns that musicians usually follow in order to sell their music or get signed to a record label.
When these blogs say these things, they are not exactly wrong or are trying to feed you mainstream nonsense.
But what’s going on is that it’s not exactly showing you the true side of things.
So what are the tried and true methods for selling your music?
Tried and true method for present day
So what happens is that back in the day, I’m not entirely sure about how people built up a following around their music and then sold their albums.
But from what I hear it has to do with a lot of performing music live and getting heard by someone in the music industry or a local label.
So, I think that the way that they used to do it before the internet was that they went around and performed around 1000 shows in their local area and then they would try and get heard by a local promoter to promote the artist to record labels and venues.
But this has largely gone out of style.
Performing live is still one of the greatest money makers of a musician today, and it’s still necessary to use it as a promotional tool.
But what about today? How has the landscape changed for today?
Today, with the rise of mass communications devices such as the cell phone and the internet, we are no longer confined to the local scene.
And beginning from the early 2000s, we have a new way of attracting new audiences to our music.
There are musicians out there that say that the internet is like a double-edged sword to the musician.
The reason is because you can communicate with a massive amount of people right from the start, but at the same time, people are stealing your music all over.
So, yeah it’s a double-edged sword.
But honestly, for me, I see it more as a benefactor than anything else.
Mainly because we don’t need a record label to promote our music to the masses anymore.
And better than that, if I really want to get specific with my music and say that my music is for fundamental baptist Christians in New York City, I could really target my audience like that and it would be next to free.
I’ve already said it on this blog before and I feel like I’m a broken record saying this but literally 70 to 80% of all the work that you need to do to attract new audiences is to literally release content.
Don’t overthink this part.
Don’t say, “Oh but how do I attract people to the content? Or how do I get views?”
It’s literally that way, by making and releasing content.
Now, when you first start making content, you’re not going to get a lot of views. Actually the first few years are going to look like nothing is going on.
But it’s in the next few years that something happens.
Like I personally got around 120 views in a month to my blog my 6th month blogging.
but it wasn’t until the next year that I was getting every month between 100 and 200 views a month to the blog.
And right now, I’m in my 4th year blogging and I’m averaging around 400 views a month to my blog.
So like it takes time but trust me it is well worth it.
And the thing with this is that it’s only going to get better from here.
