Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all my key takeaways about using session musicians.
Let’s talk about it.
So when should I use Session musicians?
Session musicians, let’s be honest, they are ideal for an album. They are perfect because they offer a dynamic that you just don’t have.
Drummers can introduce a new sense of rhythm to the whole song, bassists can introduce a groove that could be perfect to get people to dance with your song.
And instrumentalists of all kinds can do different things for your songs.
But let’s be real, all of these things require a whole lot of money.
I remember I one time asked 2 professional session musicians to help me to record a demo. And just those two professional musicians to record one song was around 300 dollars. Not to mention the fact that I had to rent out the studio that we were going to record at the same time.
And all of that money that I spent to record that demo actually came out of my pocket. I remember in those days thinking to myself, “man I don’t think I pull 10 songs this way.”
So instead I focused on releasing my own music with my own talents and abilities.
Like I program my drums and bass lines with my DAW and all that jazz.
I also program any instruments that I need in my DAW and trust me I know how to do it.
It just takes practice honestly to being able to make music like that.
But there is a time and place for session musicians.
And the time and place for session musicians is to use them when you are already making money off of your music.
And a lot of it too.
Because at that point, you can actually afford all of the sound engineers and producers and musicians that you need to make the song a reality.
So, get as far as you can before you start paying people for their work.
The skills you gain when making music by yourself
Also, the skills you gain by making music by yourself are so valuable that honestly, it’s worth making music by yourself for a few years and then working towards working with other people.
At one point you’re going to be in a mixing session with a mixing engineer and he is going to ask you how you would like it mixed.
And you’re going to need to know how to mix the vocals the way that you like it in order for it to actually sound the way that you want it to sound.
Also, by producing your own music, you will have a great way to communicate with your producer, when you have one.
There are so many intricate things in producing music and it just helps to know what you’re talking about when you produce something so that you have a clear vision as to how to do different things.
