How to mix your music on a set of bad headphones or speakers

Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to show you guys how to mix on a cheap set of speakers. 

Let’s talk about it. 

You should always look for the best option possible

I know that this sounds a little counterintuitive. 

But if you have the choice, select the best option possible.

Now for mixing music, it’s actually preferred that you select a speaker system that is flat. 

Now in a regular speaker, not mixing monitors, the music is almost always boosted. 

Specifically the bass is boosted. 

Whether that’s headphones or other systems.

They can be boosted, so that means you have to compensate for other areas of your mix. 

With that being in mind, there are producers out there that do mix on headphones. 

And it’s okay to mix on headphones. 

It’s just that they are good quality headphones. 

So if you want to mix on headphones, select the best headphones that you can get your hands on, it shouldn’t be that hard to find because a lot of even cheap headphones are actually really good. 

And just work with what you got.

How to train your ears with the bad speakers

So in every speaker system that you listen to for a mix, you need to spend some time listening to professionally mixed and mastered music through that system. 

So like if you have a set of professional mixing monitors like Yamaha HS7s or some JBLs, then you need to listen to music through those professional mixing monitors for a while. 

You need to listen to how the EQ changes and how the compression is affected and all the technicalities in the mix. 

So when you mix music through a set of bad speakers, or cheap speakers, you need to spend some time listening to music through these speakers first. 

So that way, you can compare your mix to the professional mixes and see how it sounds. 

So that way, you know for sure that no matter what system you put your music on, it will sound good. 

Of course, there is a failsafe to ensure for sure that your music will sound good on any system.

And that’s to listen to the music on a few set of speakers. 

If you don’t have professional mixing monitors, this is the next best bet. 

Just listen to your music in the car, through Ear Buds, on your T.V. Through a boom box. And if it sounds good through all of those systems, then you know for sure that it’s going to sound good. 

Usually if you have a good set of mixing monitors, then the mixing monitors will tell you the true definition of the song, so you sometimes don’t have to listen to several speakers. But even still many mixing engineers have several speakers hooked up to their computers so that they can listen to the music through different systems.
