How to practice an instrument?

Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how you’re supposed to practice an instrument. 

Let’s talk about it. 

How to practice an instrument? 

So it’s actually a very common thing that you should know that music is actually very repetitive. 

Music can be repeated I don’t know how many times in a row. 

And it’s just the nature of music. 

The balance of change and repetition. 

But likewise with repetition, the way you practice music is very repetitive. 

I will first go over how a complete beginner should practice and then I will go over how a more advanced player might practice. 

Complete beginner 

So the way that a complete beginner would actually practice is that They would take a measure, or maybe even just a few notes and they would practice that over and over again. 

Let’s say if the music calls for playing C, D, E very simple notes in a very similar and simple pattern. 

But of course you never played it before. 

Then I would just tell you to not even look at the metronome at this point. 

And just practice putting your fingers down on the fretboard and plucking the strings at the same time. 

And when you do this, I would do it painfully slow.

Like I’m talking about so slow that it hurts. 

The reason for this is because it allows you to get familiar with moving your fingers in the right spot. 

Because what you’ll realize is that even though those notes may seem simple, as a beginner it is very complicated to play those notes. 

Even though that pattern might be simple, it’s still really difficult for you to grasp around it. 

It happens to all beginner musicians. 

So, just do it so slow and don’t even worry about the metronome at this point. 

And then after you have done it a few times, try and do it a little bit faster, still without the metronome, and then a little faster, and faster, and faster, until you can do it with the correct speed. 

And then I would add the metronome. 

But the thing is that you have to do it over and over and over again until you are just fed up with the song, lol. 

And you really have to repeat that same process with your first few 50 to 100 songs that you learn. 

But each time that you learn a new song, you’ll realize that things are getting easier and easier and actually each song will become significantly easier than the last. 

Now time for a more advanced player

A more advanced player

More advanced players will be asked at times to sight read. 

And sight reading is when you instantly look at a piece and are able to sing or play it on your instrument. 

Because what happens is that at that point, it’s actually expected that musicians have a sense of rhythm that is advanced and it actually becomes easy to see and recognize different patterns on the instrument. 

So you might be looking to be a more advanced player, the best way to sight read is literally by reading a whole bunch of music. 

You will become the best sight reader that there is. 

Sight read everything and anything, and you’ll go far.
