Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some essentials that every song has.

Let’s get into it.

The rhythm section

So what happens is that there is a saying that goes on in the music industry that less is more.

And what happens is that every song has a simple structure that we all really need to copy.

And the structure is that there are chords, drums, bass lines, effects, and a voice.

Sometimes some of these things are absent from most or all of the song, but we can be rest assured that most of the songs that we’re going to deal with are all going to have some of these aspects.

So let’s talk about how to make these things work for you

Drums

So there is a common theory amongst drummers.

The theory that drummers use the most is called staying within pocket.

And basically it’s that simple groove that you hear in most songs.

Imagine saying boots and cats and boots and cats. But say that in a rhythm and that’s the basic rhythm that all music revolves around.

Well most music revolves around.

So that’s staying within pocket.

There are some drummers out there who don’t like doing that and they prefer to chop it up.

But honestly, every drummer should learn how to keep pocket because that’s the way that the drum sounds good in a song.

Now there are some things that you could do to make those drums sound interesting.

Like you could add transitions and mini transitions.

You could hear those transitions in songs when the drummers or guitarist transform one song into the next part of the song. That’s usually the transition.

Chords

Chords add harmony in a song.

They add a harmonic influence in the song that is powerful.

Now in order to really have a good sense of which chords you want in your song, you should be playing a ton of music and listening to a ton of music.

But basically, there are some rules that you should follow when making chords.

I’ve said it before on these blog posts.

But here’s a recap

  1. Make different chords sound similar to each other
  2. Start on the one and end your phrase on the IV or V (as a general rule) You can land on any chord you want, but this is a very good progression for pop music
  3. Use a mixture of Major and Minor chords
  4. (Different theory here) Use chords that sound completely different from one another.
  5. Use parallel modes lightly in order to use Chords that are non diatonic in the key.
  6. Make it simple. Stick within 2 to 4 chords (basic rule)
  7. Vary your rhythm because that’s how great songs are made, by making different rhythms.

Bass Line

A bass line is an interesting thing because it can make you dance and groove along to the song.

And when you first start out making bass lines, it’s important that you just follow the root of the chord and make the rhythm depending on how the rest of the song sounds.

Like there are a few common rhythms amongst bassists.

But of course you can make your rhythm depending on how you want it to sound.

Effects are meant to take your song to a different level.

They can be used to transition your song into a different part, or they can be used as just sound effects that add character to your music.

Last but not least voices

Of course you can’t forget about the voice that you are singing.

A lot of times it’s the singer that makes most of the money.

But in order to create great melodies, you need to learn about different melodic contours and in order to create great lyrics, you need to create a whole bunch of poems.

In conclusion

Alright guys, that’s it for this run.

It’s a few simple skeletons that you should follow for every song.

And if you follow these rules, you’ll know how to produce eventually.

Remember these few tips

So you should know that production is an art that you need to practice.

So practice making beats and producing songs.

They say that the best way to become a producer is by replicating a whole bunch of songs.

So go out there and replicate a whole bunch of songs and you will become a great producer.
