Hey everyone, so today, I’m going to show you guys how to improvise on a guitar.

Let’s get into it.

The basics

So the first thing that you should know is that improvising is basically just playing a solo that you made up on the spot.

And making a solo is a little different from improvising, though it uses similar techniques.

When making a solo, you tend to write down what you’re doing.

But when you’re improvising, you are free to use whatever you want to use in the chord progression.

So how do you improvise on the guitar?

Let’s talk about it.

Master the scales

So when you’re improvising, you will be using a lot of the scales that you always practice.

So you should be really familiar with the guitar scales that you are using.

And in reality, you should be familiar with every scale from every key.

And I say every scale from every key because when it comes to the open strings, you should be familiar with those scales too.

The rest of the fretboard is actually relatively easy to master, but the open notes can be a little tricky.

So here are some scales that you should be familiar with.

  1. Major pentatonic
  2. Minor pentatonic
  3. Modes
  4. Harmonic Minor Scales
  5. Melodic Minor scales

Those are some of the scales that you should be familiar with and in reality, it’s what most of the western music relies upon.

Master your chords

So when you’re improvising, you should also be playing chords.

Either by breaking them down and playing arpeggios or by actually strumming them.

You should know where every chord is on the guitar and the chords that you will be using in that key.

So that way you could use them to your advantage.

Practice using different techniques

Practice using hammer ons and pull offs, slides, double stops, staccatos, bends, mute strings, palm mutes, pinch harmonics, natural harmonics, pre bends, vibrattos, long notes, short notes, and the rest of the techniques that you’ve always learned in music.

When you combine all of these techniques in music, it really makes for an interesting solo.

Start off slow

So when you first start improvising, you should really start playing slow music.

And then build your way to the top.

So start off playing slow solos and then work your way to playing more and more advanced rhythms and techniques.
