Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how I started songwriting.
Let’s get into it.
How did I start songwriting?
I actually started songwriting because I actually felt compelled to write songs for God.
What happens is that I had always prayed to God to make me a great musician.
And I know that he did.
And I always felt that as a result of that talent then I need to worship the Lord with my songs because it was God who gave me the talent in music.
And ever since then, I just haven’t gone back on my word to worship the Lord with the talent that he has given me.
What happens is that I was in Music theory class one day, and I realized that I could really make great songs with the knowledge that I had.
And so I made my first song, and I will admit it was a pop song, but I made my first song and I felt really good about myself and felt good about the way that my songs were coming out.
And so I just started songwriting to either express emotions or express my love for God, but deep down inside I knew that I just wanted to express my love for God and I wanted nothing else.
So now that I told you the motives behind songwriting, let’s talk about the technical aspects of how I got into songwriting.
So at the time, I couldn’t really sing and play guitar at the same time.

I actually found it really hard to sing and play the guitar at the same time during this timeframe.
I don’t know, I guess I just never practiced it, but I knew that I wanted to write songs.
So what I would do is I would take simple chord progressions and just rearrange them however I wanted to do it.
And I would pick which ones I liked the best and try and write a melody off of it.
Eventually I got really good at singing and playing the guitar at the same time because of those singing sessions that I was having.
But I would honestly just rearrange simple chord progressions into different shapes and I would compare them to other hits that I have heard.
So say for example if I heard a I- vi-IV-V chord progression, then I would look up other famous songs that had the same chord progression.
And I wouldn’t mimic those songs, but I would try and just use that chord progression as a base to jump off of in order to create a song.
Of course at the time, my lyrics weren’t the best, but I kept at it and eventually I came out with something good.
But I will say this
I don’t think that I could make the music that I make today without the insane amount of practice in music that I did when I was a teenager.
So what happens is that you should know that making a pop song is actually relatively simple.
It’s just that it’s really complex to someone who doesn’t know anything about music.
So, what you should do is really spend good quality hours and days and years playing a whole plethora of songs so that your rhythm and ears are good enough to hear what they want.
And afterwards you should study music theory so that you can develop a good sense of music.
