Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to give some music production tips that I’ve acquired over my years of producing music.
Let’s get into it
Layer, Layer, and layer some more
So sometimes when I’m producing music, it seems like all I’m doing is layering.
And Layering is basically taking the same chords that you were playing in the main riff and putting it over another instrument.
So say for example if you’re playing the chords C, G, and F in a pattern, then what you would do is to put over that another instrument, preferably a synthesizer or piano of some sort and play the exact same C, G, and F pattern that you were doing originally.
Now it’s not always like that, but a big majority of the time, it’s doing something similar to that.
And it’s the same with Drum patterns.
Say for example if you have a bass drum on the 1 and 3 of the measure and the snare on 2 and 4.
Well then you would find different instruments that complement that snare and bass drums so that way it sounds bigger and stronger.
And the great thing about pop music is that everyone is using the same techniques so if you copy the same techniques that the greats are doing, it will sound good.
Like just the other day, I was trying to recreate that one song Mirrors by Justin Timberlake on my own and I’ll be honest, it was fairly easy to get both the chorus and the verses down because they repeat a lot and the drum patterns are the same.
Composition wise
So in order to really compose new music, you need to have already played a whole bunch of music a long time ago.
Or recreate it in your DAW.
But when I say recreate it in your DAW, I mean you need to recreate a whole bunch of songs.
And the more you create, the better it gets for you.
Music Theory wise
So the best way to learn music theory is to play a whole bunch of music for a few years and then learn music theory in the end.
And I will be honest, Music theory is sometimes complex.
I remember when I first learned music theory, it was honestly a challenge to understand.
But once I got it, I got it.
It was very strange when you learn music theory, you learn so many things about how to construct music and it’s actually a very humbling thought because you thought you knew everything about music and then you are faced with music theory and yeah.
