So, I think that there are some essentials to writing better lyrics that we all need to understand.
And what happens is that, I think that I wrote about this topic a while back ago, but I don’t think that I covered it in it’s entirety.
Without further ado, let’s get into it.
Writing Poetry or practicing lyrics?
So what happened is that there are some exercises that is practiced amongst hit makers in the music industry.
And these practices include writing down abstract concepts in an artistic fashion by focusing on your senses.
Basically coming up with what your senses tell you about a subject.
So say for example if the subject is skies, then I could write down blue waterfall that flows all around my face and engulfs me with happiness.
You could also write down simply one word phrases, such as blue, gray clouds, blue birds, birds flying high in the sky.
And so on and so forth.
And what you do is you time this writing exercise to 10 minutes and you do that every day for like 3 months straight. And by the end of those 3 months, you’re supposed to have great quality lyrics under your belt.
Of course, you’re not supposed to stop there, from that point on, in order to continue with your sense bound writing, then you need to do that exercise 3 to 4 times a week for the rest of your life, lol.
But it’s great because it helps you to use imagery for your lyrics.
You use imagery for your lyrics and that’s actually essential in music, the ability to use imagery in your lyrics to create a song is essential to the songwriters toolbox.
Now when I first wrote about this subject, I actually said that by writing poetry you will get better at songwriting.
And that is true to a certain degree, but not in it’s entirety.
The reason is because in music, we have to focus on a key element that many poets might not like, which is repetition.
Sometimes us as musicians have to repeat phrases in order to make the statement clear.
and yes writing poetry will help you to develop an artistic way of writing that is concise and “fluent” but it’s not going to get all of the aspects of songwriting under your belt.
The lyric aspect of songwriting depends on doing the exercise that I mentioned above along with poetry.
Also a healthy dose of writing actual songs yourself.
