Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to show you guys how to develop the ears for mixing.

Let’s get into it.

How to develop the ears for mixing?

So there are actually a few online exercises that you could do to help you with your mixing.

You could literally just go on YouTube and type in, “exercises to develop your ears for mixing.” and there would pop up a plethora of listening exercises that you could do in order for you to get better at mixing.

There is even a course that colleges recommend that you get in order to develop the right ears for mixing.

It’s called “Golden Ears.”

You could look it up on your own but that’s the way that people with a lot of money learn how to develop their ears in mixing.

But let me tell you the number one way over time that you could learn how to mix without buying extra courses and using the music catalog that you probably already have at your house.

It’s by listening to a lot of music through the medium in which you’re going to be mixing.

So what happens is that it’s important to note that if you listen to a lot of music through the means that you’re going to be mixing in, you have to pay attention to how everything sounds compared to what you’re mixing.

So say for example if you’re mixing a rock song and you want to mix through a set of speakers, then pay attention to how the bass, guitars, voice, and drums sound altogether through the mix.

And what I did in order to speed this up, is I went back and forth between my songs and the songs that have already been professionally mixed and mastered and I notice the differences between the two.

And I try and see where it is that I need to correct.

This method actually lead me to understand EQ really fast.

What happened is that I was listening to a song and I kept switching between my song and that song and I was like, “But my song sounds muffled, why does his sound not muffled.

And then, I looked it up on the internet and they said that the EQ gets rid of that.

And I was like, “OH, so that’s how EQ works.”

They cut out unwanted frequencies that hinder the rest of the song.

And actually now that I’m remembering it this method helped me to learn compression as well.

What happened is that I was listening to my voice in the microphone and I thought to myself that no matter how close and loud I get to the microphone, there are still some instances where the voice just suddenly becomes too quiet.

And I saw then that if there was a way to increase the volume of the quiet noises and decrease the volume of the loud noises then I would be golden.

And so, I understood then that, that’s what compression was for.

Because that’s literally what they say compression is used for in the courses that I was learning from.

This is ideal because now I know how to use compression.

Reverb and Delay was actually easy for me to grasp because it’s so noticeable, but EQ and Compression was a little more difficult to understand.

So listen to a lot of music through the medium in which you want to mix and compare it to your music and you should be good.
