Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to give some mixing advice to those bedroom producers who might not have access to the latest and greatest studio monitors.
Let’s get into it.
How to mix with Skullcandy headphones?
So first off, I must say that Skullcandy headphones aren’t bad. They are actually really good.
I personally have a pair of Skullcandy headphones and I listen to music through them all the time.
However, there is a problem with them.
They design the Skullcandies to sound really bass heavy.
Therefore it’s offering a false sense of completeness.
It doesn’t give you a good sense as to how the song should actually sound.
And in reality, no headphones does this.
No headphones no matter if it’s an Audio Technica or whatever you want to talk about, it can’t replicate studio monitors the same way studio monitors can.
However, it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to mix with these.
It just means that you should know really well how your headphones sound.
And use some best practices.
So let’s talk about how to do this.
Know your headphones
So what you should do is listen to a lot of music through the medium in which you are mixing in.
So if that means that you need to listen to music through your Skullcandy’s, then by all mean you have to listen to a lot of music through your Skullcandy’s.
Let me give you a bit of mixing advice.
On headphones, you can mix, but you just have to know that the track is almost always going to be bass boosted.
So therefore you have to compensate with your mixing skills.
This means that every single bass element is going to sound like it’s way more than what it actually is.
So you have to give everything more bass than what you were going to give it.
So especially true for Skullcandy’s, but if you listen to a reference track and see how exactly the instruments should sound with one another, then you could identify how exactly you want the song to sound.
When in doubt hear it out
So a good practice that you should take into consideration is listening to your songs through a few speaker systems so that way it sounds good on all of them.
So listen to your mix through a car speaker, T.V. speakers, and headphones and that could actually make your music sound really good because now you’re getting a wide variety of opinions that tells you how your song should sound.
Sometimes it’s good to get cheap speakers and listen to your music through them, and then some other times it’s better to listen through other speaker systems.
So just practice listening and you will be gold.
Pick the correct reference track
So if you want to pick a good reference track, then that means that you need to pick a song that sounds similar in the way that your song sounds.
So if you have a dubstep song, then pick a dubstep song as your reference track.
If you have an acoustic song with some synths, then use an acoustic track with some synths.
