Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to compose a guitar track.
Let’s get into it.
Guitar basics

So in pop music sense, a guitar is a heavily rhythm instrument.
And that means that we are supposed to use the guitar in a way that supports the rest of the song.
And I know what you’re thinking, you’re probably out there saying to yourself, “But German, what about the greats in guitar, they were soloists.”
That’s a great question let’s actually look at most of those guitarists.
So most of those guitarists still used the guitar as a rhythm instrument.
I am right now thinking to myself of all of the great electric guitar songs that I used to listen to and I can really agree that they are used for rhythm and backup instrument purposes.
You can use the guitar to make fills in the song where when the main melody is not playing, then you use the guitar to make a second melody to kind of move the song from one part to another.
But that’s seldomly in the song.
For most of the song, you’re going to have to use the guitar as a supporting instrument to the main melody.
And if that’s the case, then that means that you need to have a big chord vocabulary.
So that means that you need to be able to play a wide array of chords and play them with a good sense of rhythm.
And the rhythm that you play those chords will help to push the song forward and add a dynamic to the song that’s unique.
So when making a pop song

So when you make a pop song, you have to make the chords simple yet effective.
So if you pick a chord progression the simplicity about it could be that it’s between 2 to 4 chords but the complex part about it could be the chords that you’re picking.
So if you’re making a chord progression you could pick the chords G, D, Em, C
and that chord progression would work great, but you could also make the chords a little more complicated and it would make it sound great as well.
So then your I V vi IV chord progression in the key of G would turn into G, Dsus4, Em7, Cadd9 just as an example.
Because what happens is that when you’re making a pop song it should be a balance between complex and simplicity so when you’re making the chords, it could be a simple as a I V vi IV chord progression but then you would need to make the rest of the song more complex.
Remember that for most pop songs, simplicity is key and don’t overcomplicate things because that’s usually not necessary.
