Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to give you guys 3 songwriting challenges that will help you to create great music.
Let’s get into it.
Challenge 1 Make a great pop hit with only the most common chord progressions

So it happens more often than not, but what happens is that as a musician, you actually do a lot of things that have already been done before.
Like say for example you use the I-IV-V chord progression.
That chord progression has been used since the dark ages and yet people are still using them.
Singing a melody with only three notes has already been done before.
Repetition has been done before.
Like you name it and it probably has already been done.
So what I recommend is to just pick up your guitar or piano or whatever instrument you use to accompany you while you sing.
And make a hit song with just the chords that you’ve always heard.
Here are some chord progressions that you could do.
Common chord progressions
- I-IV-V
- I-vi-IV-V
- I-V-vi-IV
- I-ii-I-ii
- I-V-I-V
Those chord progressions have been used forever and if you can make a hit song with these chord progressions, then you have probably made a hit song that people will like.
Make a hit song with only using notes that are within the key that you’re in

It’s often said that pop songs almost always fall within the Major Key or the Minor key and they hardly venture out of those two.
Now yes there are such thing as alien notes and modal interchange.
But the majority of Pop songs just fall within the Major and Minor keys.
So, just to start out, make a song that just falls within the Major and Minor Keys and you will go a long way.
Make a song and sell it on the internet
Now I don’t care if it’s your first song and you have no listeners.
Just getting that first song out there is enough for you.
Because when you first start out, you are starting out small and if you start out small it’s good enough because you will succeed if you just keep on at it.
Always pray to God for strength to do the work and he will give you strength.
