Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to create the perfect melody.

Let’s get into it.

2 main songwriting approaches

So there are two main approaches to songwriting.

So the first main approach is to start off with a fast melody in the verses and have long slow choruses.

So basically you have 16th note melodies in the verses and half notes and whole notes in the chorus.

That’s one method.

And the other method is that you have long slow verses and fast choruses.

So basically the inverse of the first method.

I.E. whole notes and half notes for the verses and 8th note and 16th notes for the choruses.

That’s one way to do it

And I’m more than definitely sure that there is someone out there that has done something different but, the main way that you create great verses and choruses is by starting low in the verses and ending high in the chorus.

So say for example, you are singing a low G in the verses as a one note hook, then in the chorus sing a High G and that would make for a great chorus.

And you can go as high as you want HOWEVER, it’s important to remember that great melodies are singable, so if you try and make a song that is 4 octaves in range, that’s great technically, but no one is going to want to listen to that song.

So remember to keep your melodies within 1 range and a half from the lowest note to the highest note.

Create every line as if it was a hook and save your best hooks for your choruses

That’s actually a tip that I heard from Ryan Tedder.

Ryan Tedder is the songwriter of OneRepublic.

And I saw him in a T.V. Show called Songland and he said to make your best hooks for the chorus and make every line like a hook.

When jumping up to the chorus, make the jump between a perfect 5th and up.

So when you’re starting off low, you can actually go all over the range of the octave, however, save those key notes that you sing in the chorus for the chorus.

So say for example if you’re singing G, A, B for the verses, then save your High G, A, B for the choruses.

And if you want to create a bridge, then use notes that are hardly used for the bridge.

And that’s what I got for you guys.
