Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to shar with you all some independent studies that I’ve done on how to create orchestras.
Let’s get into it.
So I’ve read and also I’ve noticed some things
So what happens is that when you’re learning how to produce music, you actually have to listen to a lot of music.
And when you listen to this music, you have to engage with this listening in order to pick apart the song and really understand what it consists of.
And also, it helps to look up some of the techniques yourself so that you know what to look out for.
So what I’m about to teach you, are some of the things that I’ve personally listened to in songs and also some things that I’ve read on the internet and books about music theory.
And when I say create orchestras, I’m referring to the pop sense of creating orchestras not necessarily the same orchestras that you would hear in the theatre.
Anyways, let’s talk about how to create pop orchestras.
Layer
So layering is when you take the same chords or the same instrument and put another instrument on top of that that’s playing the exact same thing either in the same octave, octave up octave down or however you want to do it.
And that’s the basics of an orchestra.
So say for example you are playing a G Chord and you want to put in some orchestras, you would then just play a G Chord with the violins and cellos and that would be one way that you could include an orchestra.
It’s not the only way to do it but all of these other methods that I’m about to give you is similar to this so just keep that in mind.
Play the same melody

So another techniques that you could do is to play the same main melody.
So say for example if you’re singing G,A,B then you could play the exact same notes in the orchestras while you are singing the melody, a layer of a sort except you’re not layering the chords, you’re layering the melody.
And one way that you could use both of the techniques that I just listed above is by playing the orchestras for the chords until you get to the chorus and then at the chorus, at the important part, play the orchestras with the melody. It highlights important pieces of music in your songs.
Use the orchestra to fill in space
so many people talk about drum fills, however, an orchestra is another perfect way to transition from smaller pieces of the musical piece to another or even larger pieces to the next.
So say for example you’re singing a song, and there’s a slight pause, that could be a good time to use an orchestra to fill in space.
Or if you have a larger pause, use the orchestra to play a solo to transition from pause to the next section.
So one way you could do that is by literally playing a melody during the pauses and then going back to layering the chords or the main melody during the main melody.
Because what happens is that if you play another melody while you’re playing the main melody, it can sound busy and not that good.
And those are the main ways that you could use orchestras, at least the way that I’ve noticed and seen in books.
