Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to teach you guys how to sing.
Let’s get into it.
hum
So the first exercise that I was ever shown was how to hum.
You need to hum in order to develop your diaphragm. And your diaphragm is the part in your body that really supports the voice. It’s the muscle underneath your lungs that can push out the air that’s in your lungs.
And when you hum you actually start to put to use that muscle without using your throat.
My choir teacher once told me, do not sing with your throat, sing with your diaphragm because that’s how you’re supposed to sing.
And so I would go home and I would practice singing by humming first.
And basically the first thing that you should do when you humming is practice humming songs and practice humming scales while going up and down on the scales to help sharpen your voice.
That’s basically what you’re supposed to do.
Open your mouth while you hum
So the next thing that you should do is that you should hum and then while you’re humming, open your mouth.
And boom you have singing.
It’s kind of a mind muscle connection that you have to do when you do this exercise.
You connect what you know to your body when you do this exercise because instead of humming you have now produced singing.
And once you have the feel of how singing is supposed to sound, try singing a song without humming it first and you’ll get a grasp at how you’re supposed to sing.
Some tips for singing
When you’re singing, you might hear on a professional record someone sliding into a note.
Now though that person might actually be sliding into the note, 9 times out of 10 they actually are not and it’s just their voice that makes it sound like that.
So what you should practice doing is that you should practice just going into note after note legato and staccato.
Don’t slide into the notes, but go directly into them when singing the song.
It will sound better if you do it this way.
you should also start singing songs that are comfortable within your range.
Something preferrably in the key of C, a lot of people can sing comfortably within the key of C. But you should test it out to see if you are in fact one of those people.
I would also recommend that if you’re a new singer, that you should practice singing opera style first.
What happens is that a good singer can sing opera style and can easily transfer their voice to pop music later on.
However, it’s not so the other way around.
