Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to use a reference track in mixing.

Let’s get into it.

Compare what the greats are doing

So for those of you that don’t know, in music.a reference track is a song that you are trying to compare your music against.

I think you can use it for the actual production of the song, but I have mainly heard it being used for the mixing of the song.

And what you’re trying to do is you’re trying to make your song sound like the professional song that is already mixed and mastered and released to all major streaming platforms.

So what you’re supposed to do is take a song that is preferrably within the scope of your song, and compare it against your song.

So when I say that’s within the scope of your song, I mean if you have an acoustic song with acoustic elements like acoustic drum kits or a natural voice and an electric guitar bass line, then find a song that is similar to that.

If you have an EDM song, then find another song that has similar elements to your song and is an EDM song.

That way, you actually sound like how you want it to sound.

And you have a goal that you can reach for in your song.

Why do we do this?

When you’re mixing, there are actually a few different approaches that you could take in your mix.

And any one of them would be fine and would work but would it be how you wanted it to sound?

Because the way that you mix a hip-hop song is completely different than how you would mix a rock song.

And even our ears have to hear different elements in the mix when we’re mixing a song.

So in a Hip-hop song, your bass drum might come out a whole lot more, whereas in a lot of rock songs, they almost hide the bass drum in the mix against the electric guitars and the vocals.

So when you have a song that you want to compare your song against, you will know what style of mixing you want to take in your mix.

If you mix without a clear direction as to how you want it to sound, it could get confusing making the mixing decisions that you need to take.
