Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to try and tackle a part in songwriting that gets a big chunk of people.

Let’s get into some lyrics

The 2 main approaches to lyric writing

So, there are a few different techniques that you could use to create great lyrics.

Not one is better than the other.

The first method that you should be aware of is the conversation method.

So you write the lyrics as if though you were having a conversation with someone.

Not a focus on imagery or metaphors though you can use it if it describes the song better.

And the second method is the poetic method of doing it

Where you use a wide array of poetic and literary devices to describe the situation.

Let’s get into both of these methods

The conversation method

There is a songwriter in the music industry and his name is Ryan Tedder.

you might know him as the lead singer to the band OneRepublic.

And what happens is that he writes songs for other big named artists as well.

And would you believe that the songs that he makes, are some of the most played songs that there has been in the last 50 years.

He was a relatively young guy when he made it to the scene and his biggest hit I would say captivated audiences around the world.

And he follows the conversation method.

He makes his lyrics as if though he was talking to someone else.

And he says to keep it simple, use simple terms and words that people can understand because that way people can relate to your song and will make it more of a hit in the long run.

There is another songwriter out there named Kara Dioguardi

She used to be on American Idol as a judge

and actually I’ve read a few of her books on how to write songs.

And she says to use Metaphors and imagery and literary devices to explain your song.

She helped to write that hit single by Enrique Iglesias titled Somebody’s me. And I will say that, that song Somebody’s me, was a big hit.

Enrique Iglesias sold more than 70 million albums with some of her help.

So yeah.

So no matter what you pick, you’re winning

So it goes to show you that no matter the method that you pick, you are going to win.

however, here is the key to both of these methods.

Practice doing both of them

You need to spend a whole lot of time practicing both of these techniques because learning how to write a song as if you’re talking to someone else is a technique, it’s a skill that you need to learn.

And when I say practice, you need to spend good quality hours writing songs with both of these perspectives.

And combining them can be a big factor in your songwriting abilities.
