Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some tips on what are the best practices to listen to music.
This way you listen to music intently and objectively.
Let’s get into it.
The old school method
So the way that music producers back in the day used to get better at producing music is by listening to a track and taking a notebook and writing down what they heard.
And what they would do is if say for example they hear a track with 2 acoustic guitars and a voice, then they would write down, “2 acoustic guitars with a voice.” On their notepad.
And then they would re-listen to the same song over again until they picked out the nuances of the mix as well.
For sometimes producers are in charge of the mix as well.
So they would listen to how much reverb is on a song or how much compression they put on the vocals.
So say for example you hear a song that you like, then take a notebook and write down all of the elements that you hear in the song.
And really try and hone in on even the smallest details of the song, even that hi hat that might be difficult to hear, you really have to try and hear where it’s being placed and what kind of effects are being put on it.
The new school method

So this isn’t really new, and as a matter of fact it’s been used by producers for a long time, but I call it the new school method because a lot of producers like to skip the old school method and go straight to doing what I’m about to tell you, I’m guilty of that just by the way.
And what it is, is you have to recreate a whole bunch of productions that are professionally made already.
And specifically, you have to recreate a whole bunch of songs that are within the genre that you want to create.
Now if you want to do a healthy mix of all genres, well then you’re in for a bit of a surprise because you got to listen to a WHOLE bunch of music and recreate those songs that you really enjoy.
Mixing both new school and old school
Practice makes perfect and if you haven’t realized that by now, well then welcome to music.
Because repetition is a key element in music, not just in the theory aspect, but also in the actual preparedness of it all.
Repetition makes perfect.
