So, this question doesn’t really make sense from the musicians perspective because every musician who has ever made it big did it in a way that might have been unique or different from the last ten rockstars on the list.

But all in all there are some common practices that every musician does and some things that modern musicians do heavily.

Let’s talk about these things.

Step one make sure that you’re an excellent musician

So I have been in a few shows where people sincerely thought that the talent that they brought, was going to land them a major label contract.

And I get it, you are entitled to your own opinion about how good music actually is.

But the thing about it is that it’s your opinion and if your music or your talent is sincerely not good, then people will recognize that the talent was not good.

Like have you ever heard someone say that they sing like a frog? Well that joke is not far off from the truth, when someone doesn’t know how to sing, it sincerely sounds like a frog croaking sometimes.

And I have heard and seen people who sing like that play at concerts and some venues.

So like, the first step in really making sure that you’re ready for a music career is by literally being the best musician that you can possibly be.

And that means singing, that means learning how to rap, or learning the guitar or piano.

And guess what? All of this, is going to take years to develop.

It takes years to develop the musicianship needed to create great songs and be on a record contract.

So step one, be an excellent musician

Step 2 create a following

So this is a more new method of being a musician, but nonetheless it has become ever so important in the music game.

You really have to create a following of dedicated people who like your music.

And the internet has really made it easy to get viewers and followers.

Story time

So the reason why I was able to get the ball rolling so fast in my blog is because I got certified in an unaccredited certificate in social media management.

And I learned the number on thing that you need to know about gaining a following on your socials.

The number on thing that you need to know is that content is king.

If you put out the content, and do a little bit of back work, then people will find your socials and start following you.

But content is king remember that.

There are plenty of people on the internet that say that the best way to get the ball rolling on your socials is literally just by putting up content.

In a blog it’s a little more, like you have to put your site on google search console, and monitor your metrics. But that’s really about it.

So yeah, get a following.

And there’s a reason why record labels are now looking at followings for potential talent.

The reason why is because if you have a following, it has been proven that more people will buy from you.

And if you have a following, then if your music career fails, then they will have the following already in place to cushion the blow and maybe at least pay back that bonus that was given to you in the contract.

Try and sell music on your own first before signing to any label.

So labels want to actually see that you sell out first before they sign you on.

So that includes selling merch, selling tickets to your shows and selling albums and singles.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but to be honest with you, it’s how it has to be done.

Now they might make an exception to this one because your music is super fire and you have like a million followers on each social platform so that means that you’re very influential, but in all reality, if you’re not the next Justin Bieber, it’s hard to get through this noise.

So try and sell music on your own first, that will also help you in gaining music lawyers because now you have income coming in for your music.

So yeah, work super hard at this part because that way it will provide not only for your music career, but you might be able to afford a couple of Jordans along the way.
