Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to go into how to write your first hit song.

Let’s get into it

Pick a chord progression: Don’t overcomplicate things

So there are a whole bunch of theories that circulate chord progressions and how to use them.

However, for your first song, just pick a simple chord progression that has a track record of making it big on the charts.

Such as the I-V-vi-IV Chord progression.

Just pick that chord progression and play it in a rhythm that you choose and play it for the entire song.

Don’t overcomplicate things. Chord progression done.

Pick a theme: Hint love is a powerful and easy topic to talk about

Next pick a set of lyrics that you’re going to aim for and talk about love.

Pick love as your theme and talk about love.

Talk about it in a unique perspective.

Did she break your heart? Did you break your own heart? Is this new love? Is this puppy love? Is it genuine love? Is it the love that you have for your mom or dad or a brother or sister? As Christians we have to talk about the love of God, but what about it? Is it how God showed you love and now you are blessed? Is it just the love of God? Is it how the love of God is overwhelming? Deep love for God? Your love towards the Lord? I mean there are so many ways that you can go about this and it’s just a great topic to talk about. So pick love as your first hit song’s theme.

More advance topic: Melody

There is a saying that says that the melody is the most important aspect of the song, and quite frankly a whole bunch of musicians think the same way.

So let’s talk about melody.

Your melodies should be hooky. Your melodies should be hooky in the verses and extremely hooky in the choruses.

Therefore, you need to create hooks and practice creating hooks.

There are a couple of methods on how to do it but all of them revolve around making melodies.

There are a few different melodic contours.

There is Ascending (Where the melody goes up) Descending(Where the melody goes down) Jagged (Where the melody goes up and down really fast) Static where the melody remains on one or two notes and Ascending and descending where it goes up and then down.

Now the key in making complex melodies that doesn’t sound too boring is to mix up these different melodic contours. So say for example you start your melody with a static melody then in the next part of your melody switch it over to an ascending melodic contour.

You can have strictly one melodic contour for the verses and then another one for the chorus but if you want to mix it up, you know what to do.

Remember that in your songs, you should always have at least 2 melodic contours in the entirety of your songs.

It makes it interesting.

Remember to start low and end up high in the choruses.

Remember that speed is an important factor in music. Faster means more energetic and slower means sadder.

But you need both in order to make great music.

And that’s basically it

That’s basically it. Now go out there and make a hit song.

Remember your boy German when it’s all said and done.
