Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to write memorable music.
Let’s get into it
Hooks, all types of hooks
So let’s talk about a few different types of hooks that you can use as a musician.
First let’s talk about what is a hook.
A hook is a musical phrase that catches the attention of the listener.
A hook could be a sequence of chords, it could be a melodic line, it could be a drum fill, there are quite a variety of ways that we can use hooks to our advantage.
But just understand that in order to make our music memorable, we need to write a lot of hooks.
As a matter of fact, every line that we write should be a hook.
And there are certain ways that we can do that.
Let’s talk about the chords first
How to make hooks with chords A.K.A the rhythmic hook
A rhythmic hook is a hook that focuses on the rhythm of the sound instead of the melodic virtue that it would have.
So in this instance a chord progression could be a rhythmic hook.
So let’s say that we have the I-IV-vi-V Chord progression.
That alone is a rhythmic hook strong enough to captivate a tons of audiences.
But if you were to add a strong rhythm to that chord progression, you have a golden rhythmic hook.
Now chords kind of like lay the foundation of the song.
It supports the song in the direction that it’s going.
And it also resolves the song.
So right now, we have a golden chord progression and if you play it right, you have a golden hook so that means that your foundation is set. Now it’s time to make it look pretty with the melody.
Focusing on the melody/ melodic hook.
So there are a ton of ways that you could write a melody.
I’m going to go over a few of those ways right here.
So first let’s talk about the ideal hook length.
1 note hooks are strong and can be very powerful to give a feeling of anxiousness. It could feel like there is a ton of pressure to feel emotional. So one note hooks are very useful and can be very emotional. But of course everything depending on how you want to use it. I have heard happy songs with one note hooks and I’ve heard sad songs with one note hooks.
2 note hooks add a variety to your music. Instead of focusing on the one note pattern that you would have, having 2 notes makes it less stale and what you could do is introduce a simpler rhythm to the 2 note hook because in all reality a one note hook needs to be very rhythmically interesting in order to be good but 2 notes let’s your hook breathe and wiggle a little bit.
3 note hooks are regarded as the sweet spot for making a hook. Many musicians say that a three note hook is the strongest hook that you could make because it’s a perfect balance between simple and complex. The three note hook allows for simple rhythms that are not too simple and a complex enough note selection to where it can not sound too stale. Very emotional and sweet is the three note hook
Now let’s talk about some general directions that you would want in your music
Start Low and end high
So the most common type of progression in a song is when you start off at a low pitch and end on a high pitch.
But there’s a way that you would do this.
You would start and sing in a lower part of the register during the verses and then sing high in the choruses.
So say for example you’re in the key of C and you’re singing middle C on the Piano for the verses, you would then sing an octave higher in the choruses to make that sound really impactful.
That’s just an example.
You could go to a fifth or higher to make it sound really impactful.
This isn’t a comprehensive list of things that you should be doing in music to write songs, but this is just getting you started in writing songs
