Hey guys! Today, I’m going to go over a few different ways that you can make a song, and also how I make a song.

Let’s get into it

First method and the highly praised method is to write a melody first

The biggest names in music history have accredited to their songwriting genius to writing the melody first.

I have read books about writing melodies in the past and it’s often said that if you want to create a memorable melody, write the melody first.

And I understand where it comes from.

It’s just that when you write the melody first, you are not limited or constrained by the rules of music theory.

When you are singing to yourself, you are not even sometimes aware that you are singing in a key and yet you are singing a memorable line to yourself.

I must say that this method is highly sought after and can make for great lines.

I highly recommend anyone who starts writing pop songs to write lines of melodies first and try and write some lyrics to it as well.

This will undoubtedly lead to more advanced and complex lines later on down the road.

Second method, write the chords first

The chords are really the foundation of the song.

A good chord progression can tell you a lot about the song.

A good chord progression can tell you where to put the drums, what kind of fills the drums need to have, it can also tell you the groove that the bass line is supposed to have.

A good chord progression can do wonders.

A good chord progression can also help build your melody.

When we sing a melody by ourselves, it might sound great alone, but when put up against other backing elements that are essential to a song, it might not sound so great.

Which is why some musicians will testify to writing the chords first.

Actually second to the melody method comes this one in a pretty close second as to the most popular way to write a song.

Drums

Another way to start a song is by writing the drums first.

To me, this is more so of a producer way to write a song.

I actually start with drums whenever I’m producing a hip-hop beat. It just makes sense to me.

I don’t know why, it feels comfortable to write drums when I’m faced with a DAW.

However, some songwriters tend to feel a bigger rhythmic diversity when they have a drum pad or a snare in front of them and that could make for a really good rhythmic hook. Which could lead to a melodic hook or a chord rhythmic hook.

Any other instrument

Most other instruments fall within these categories.

A violin could fall within a melodic hook, a piano could fall within chords, etc. etc.

Just know the basics fall really close to this

Now what’s my method on writing songs?

Aside from producing Hip-Hop beats, There is one particular method that I gravitate towards whenever I’m writing music.

And that’s by writing the chords first.

It’s just that to me, it makes sense to write the chords first.

And the reason is because writing the chords first means that I already have a successful part of my song.

you might listen to a wide variety of songs, however, you should know that a big portion of the greatest hits that there have ever been have followed the same chords and same chord progressions that have been used for years

So if your foundation is great, if the chords that you are using are already the best that there is, then the only thing that you need is the melody and you’re golden.

You might say that you need to write the bass line and the drums and the synthesizers too but I’m telling you right now that if you can make a song sound good with just the chords and the voice, then you have a great song and great music.

Also, I’m very heavy on the music theory, So having a key already mapped out for me makes it easy for me to make melodic hooks,

anyways, that’s my take on it.
