Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to give you all some insight as to why being a musician with a day job isn’t all that bad.
Let’s get into it.
It’s not that bad
When I was 14 or 15 years old and I was a big time musician, I honestly would rather be caught dead than to work a regular 9 to 5. The thought of working a regular day job just dreaded me.
Why?
Because in my head I thought to myself that if it ever got to that point, then I wouldn’t have done anything in music.
But then I turned 18.
Now mind you that at this point I had already won some awards in music as a student.
So right now, I felt as if though I was ready to conquer the world, I felt as if though I was ready to become the next hit star.
But I quickly realized that it takes more than just skill in music in order to make it as a musician.
Maybe some people might be able to get away with being young and a celebrity, but not me.
For me, it required a following, professional demos, time in the studios, time developing my own sound. etc. etc.
I remember I had turned 19 and I had a sales job which in quite retrospect, it was providing a lot of money to me at the time.
And I was 19 and I remember having so much money that I invested in studio time at the local recording studio.
I promise you that at this point, I thought to myself that I had made it. I thought to myself that this is it, the big leagues.
And sure enough, I recorded my first song and the manager looked at me and said, “German, do you have a following?” I said, “No, I don’t have a following.”
and he said, “Well go get your following and let me know what comes out of it.”
I of course never went back to that following.
I never tried to develop the following,
But I always wonder what would’ve happened if I had actually came back with the following .
Anyways, when the manager told me to get a following, I was under the assumption that he wanted me to get a few of my friends to follow me on Facebook.
But the reality is that people want to see like 10,000 followers on your socials.
And quite frankly, I don’t know how to get that.
I didn’t know how to look for that.
And so the hunt went on.
and I realized how much work is actually required to be a part of the music industry.
Fast forward to today
Today, I realize that in reality, I needed to become a musician with a day job at one point in my life.
And it’s a blessing because honestly if it weren’t for all of the things that I ever got in life, including the jobs, I wouldn’t be anywhere in life.
Because it was all a learning experience for me.
So I say, If you need to become a musician with a day job, then embrace it because it’s going to build you up one way or another.
