Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to go over some bass line fundamentals.
Let’s get into it.
How to create a great bass line for your song?
For every song that you create, there is a certain groove that you need to identify.
In most rock songs that groove is pretty simple, follow relatively close to the root or always the root, and either play slow rhythms while playing notes in the chords or play fast and a simple melodic contour like a single note melody.
But in other songs, the groove can be a little complicated.
In Hip-hop, Jazz, especially in Jazz. These elements need a little more rhythm and note selection.
It’s important to remember that the point of the bass line is to support the reset of the song with deep, low, rich tones in order to help give the song more sustenance.
So let’s go over some different types of bass lines.
The melodic bass line
The melodic bass line is a bass line that follows the melody.
So if you sing Do- re- mi
Then the bass line will also sing Do- re- mi
Low and slow
There is another theory in creating bass lines where all you have to do is follow the root of the chord that is being played and play long slow notes with those notes.
So say for example if you have a I- V- vi- IV Chord progression, then all you would do is play the root of each chord when the chord is played and hold out that note, it sounds complicated but if you’ve ever played a whole note, that’s literally all you have to do.
This theory works well with ballads and certain rock songs
Octaves
There is another bass line where people just play octaves apart from one another.
Follow the skeleton
A Chord usually consists of 3 or more notes played at the same time. And when you follow the skeleton, you literally just play all of the notes in the chord in different manners.
So in a Chord progression if you have a C Chord, then the notes in the C Chord are C, E, and G. So a bassist who would follow the skeleton would just play the notes C, E ,and G.
