Today was Sunday and praise the Lord I went to church. I have started to go to church more frequently, but that’s not the reason why I am talking to you today. The reason why I am talking to you is because today my preacher said something very interesting that peaked my interest. In the books of where Paul wrote to the gentiles, Paul was writing from a prison. However, hardly did Paul talk about his imprisonment. For these consecutive letters that he wrote to the gentiles, he mentioned Jesus over 100 times. He mentioned his imprisonment I think 4 times. However that is not the main point of the story today, let’s talk about this a little bit.
Being a prisoner of the world
The way that my preacher put it, he said if we were in prison, God forbid, if we were in prison, who and what would we write to? My preacher said that he would write to a defense attorney trying to get him to get my preacher out. He would be complaining and asking to get out because it’s just awful.
When Paul was in prison, he didn’t do that. Rather, Paul wrote about the Lord and what are things that we need to do in order to better serve him. He wrote about the holy things that God had placed on his mind.
There are a few verses in these letters that say, “I do that which I do not want to do…” I am paraphrasing here a little bit, but it literally says that. What does this mean regarding us though?
When we are a prisoner of the world, we focus on the earthly things. We focus on things that are not things that God wants us to worry about in life. Not only that, but also we are bound by our own sin nature.
Everyone in the world, including me, has sin nature. No matter what good thing you do will stop that sin nature. When we get saved by Jesus, we are forgiven and ultimately don’t have to pay the penalty for our past, present, and future sins. My good deeds will not get me into heaven, but rather, the blood of the lamb will.
Being a prisoner of Jesus
What does it mean to be a prisoner of Jesus? Jesus called us to be a holy people, a holy nation. As such, we should always aim to fulfill the work that Jesus has called us to do. That work can be a wide variety of things, but we must do it.
Our calling is to be in the mission fields. What are our mission fields? Work, Home, Church, we must always be looking to be in the mission fields.
Being a prisoner of Jesus means that we abide in him. So you may ask me, “German, why do you have to be a prisoner, why can’t you be free?” I’ll tell you why, because in these letters, it says that we are a prisoner of something or someone. We can either be a prisoner of the world or we can be a prisoner of Jesus.
When you become a prisoner of Jesus, you become free. However, This freedom, this liberty, has responsibilities. You are not free to go about and drink wherever you want or party with whoever. Rather, you are free in the will of God.
