Remember that if you’re faithful with little, you’re faithful with a lot. that’s not just a bible verse, it’s also truth.

So, there are a variety of ways that a person can get into the Christian music industry. However, a lot of the jobs require the same skills found in the next job. Whether that’s being a songwriter or a producer, mixing engineer or session musician, it all takes some practical application to it and practice, a lot of practice.

Here is an explanation as to what is a Christian music producer and also some tips as to how to become a modern day Christian music producer.

First off, what is a Christian music producer?

A music producer can range from jobs in a music setting. It can range from beat maker to instrumental selector. The entire process revolves around making music, so let’s go over a few things that you could possibly do as a music producer.

You could make beats for Christian rappers. Making an instrumental for a Christian artist is a big challenge. Not only does it have to sound good, but your mixing skills have to be up to par as well. As a producer, you have to have a vision as to how your music has to sound and if you leave the mixing process up to someone else, then that vision might never come true.

On top of that, if you add someone else to mix for you, then you have to split your 50 percent publishing with someone else.

Also, you could take some acoustic tracks and add synthesizers, drums, effects, different instruments, layers, background vocals, etc. etc. on to the track in order to make it a very good album.

I know I kind of went over this already but you have to know how to mix.

That is a skill that takes years to perfect. You have to develop critical listening skills and that takes time on its own. You have to listen to a lot of music through speakers that are designed for mixing and you have to be up to date as to what are the best mixing skills for today’s music. I remember I once tried to mix my song to the song sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee. It sounded like it but I think that the mix was too much for the song that I did. That’s a rookie mistake. I wanted my song to sound intimate and I didn’t do that. I made it sound like it should have been played in an auditorium.

Alright now to the juicy part of the blog post, tips!

Here is an article I wrote about some basics in mixing music.

Here are some music mixing tips that no one wants you to know.

Tip #1, know your music theory

Photo by Yaroslav Shuraev on Pexels.com

I feel like music theory is what’s going to make or break an album or track.

I’m not trying to say that lyrics are nothing and you should just make great melodies with alright lyrics. No, by far no. But what I am trying to say is that you can make something sound good with the right melody. You can also make it sound bad with the right melody.

As part of my guitar lessons, I was taught music theory. So, I had a pretty good grasp of music theory before I went into the class my junior year. I can honestly say, that knowing your music theory will expand your music knowledge and ultimately songwriting knowledge. You will be able to identify what chords belong where, how to use chords, where to add dissonance and harmony, different types of melodies, etc. etc. So it’s good to have at least a basic understanding of music theory.

Also, knowing how to read music will prove to be helpful. I remember I once wrote a song using Sibelius and Sibelius actually helped me out a lot because I was able to hear the melody and chords against each other, which is something that I can’t really do with just my voice sometimes, that song went and got 5 stars on Paul Loggins promotion company.

Here is a website that goes in depth about music theory. I personally used that website for my music theory classes.

Here is an article that I wrote about the only music theory that you need in order to get you going in music.

Tip 2, know how to mix

I know enough on how to mix in order to get me by through my mixes. However, I am by no means a professional mixing engineer. I am learning how to produce and mix my own songs but it takes time to perfect that craft.

I highly recommend online certificates and online classes on how to mix and take them because they will help you out a lot in the studio.

Mixing is one of those skills that can become fun because it’s actually an art, learning how to mix. The art is so unique and fun and challenging at times too.

Here is a great link to practice all of your mixing techniques. This link gives you free multi-tracks so that you can practice your mixing.

Learn how to record

Go out and buy yourself a DAW, learn the ropes on how to record music and sure enough that too will prove to be helpful in your music career. I don’t have anything fancy but I’m learning how to do it all. As a matter of fact my mic just broke, haha! Now I have to go out and get a new microphone in order to record my newest album.

Tip 3, learn to song write

So, the entire music industry has shifted into a sort of different category as to who is marketable or not. The entire music industry has shifted into looking for a Producer/Songwriter. It’s just a more marketable skill to have, songwriting.

Also, no matter what happens, a producer should almost always be involved with the songwriting process. Why? Because the producer could add effects and sounds that would highlight different lyrics or song elements. Also, adding another head to the mix is never a bad thing. Two heads are better than one.

Here is a link to the lyric writing book that I use in order to write great lyrics.

Here is an article I wrote about how to develop your songwriting abilities to the point where you write professional songs.

Last tip, blog

I cannot stress enough on how important it is to blog or start a YouTube channel. As a producer or musician, it’s so vital to being able to reach out to your audience in any way possible. Blogging is the easiest way to gain a following, YouTube is the fastest. There are upsides and downsides to both but they are both worth the struggle.

I chose blogging because I just didn’t have enough time to make a new YouTube video every week. It was time consuming. I tried, I honestly did, but it’s a lot of time that you have to invest into YouTube.

Blogging takes a lot of time too but in a different way. With blogging it takes time over longer periods of time which makes it less time for you during the day. So I can still maintain my two jobs, go to college, and write my songs and hit the gym all at the same time and still keep up with my blog. The problem is that it takes a significantly longer time to rank on google than on YouTube. YouTube is a lot of faster work, Blogging is a lot of slower more patient work. But both are worth it.
