Should Christian musicians play at bars and nightclubs?

I know, I’ve been there before. You want to spread the news of who you are and the message of the good news is to the world but you don’t know where to start playing gigs. I feel you when you say that you want to show off your skills and also the message of God, however, we must also be aware of a certain amount of things when we play Christian music at places, let’s talk about this.

Is it appropriate to play at bars/nightclubs?

So, is it appropriate for a Christian band to play at a bar or nightclub?

            Let’s look at it this way

            When we perform our music, it is our form of jewels that we are sharing to the Christian community and should not be shared with anyone else.

            What happens is that God needs to prepare the heart to listen to that kind of message and if you heart isn’t prepared to listen to that message, well then it could turn really bad for that Christian.

            I remember a few times I have gone against what the bible says regarding this situation and I can honestly say that it did indeed went bad. So, have faith that God is right and trust in his word.

Is the club a place for you to be?

            Me personally, I have been at a few clubs before and I realized that it wasn’t the place where I belonged.

            The last club that I went to I saw people doing cocaine in the bathroom. There was explicit music playing, and I could honestly say that there was no place where God belonged in that room.

            I couldn’t believe that I was in such a place.

            The first place that I ever went to was a heavy metal club and those guys were a rowdy bunch. I’ll never forget it, but I remember that it couldn’t have been a place where Christian music was played at.

What if I want to reach out to people in darkness?

            There are ways that you can reach out to people in darkness, however, playing at bars and nightclubs is not the way to do it.

            How can you share the message of God to people when all that’s going on is cursing, loud music, drugs, alcoholism, etc. etc?

            What does the bible say about all of this? “Fear the Lord and depart from evil, it will be health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones” that’s proverbs.

            If you see danger, you need to depart from it, that’s bible.

And top of all that, it can actually be a little dangerous performing at bars.

I one time was performing at a bar, and the act before me was doing something that the crowd didn’t like. so you know what happened? the crowd threw their trash at him.

And believe it or not, I have heard stories of people throwing beer bottles at the performer. Yes it was quite intense.

I’m not downing anyone who performs Christian music in those places, I had a friend and he used to perform Christian music at those places. and I encouraged him all the way, even though I said in myself that I didn’t think he should’ve been doing that.

Currently I perform at a cafe, and it’s very strange how this cafe works, it’s a cafe during the day, and at night, but at night time they also serve alcohol.

But the hosts make it very clear that that it’s a family friendly show meaning no cursing and that we are to be respectful to all performers at all times. So it’s actually a very healthy environment. and actually there are a lot of Christian acts that go up and perform and The house performer is actually a Christian musician.

I just wish they didn’t serve alcohol I would be there every Thursday night.

There’s another place that I go to and that place doesn’t serve any alcohol, I want to perform there every Friday night. God will help me.

Hey guys, I wanted to say that you guys aren’t missing out on much when performing at bars and nightclubs anyways and here is a bible study about Ecclesiastes that I wrote that would further explain this situation. Why it’s vain why most of the things we pursue are vain but why God has a purpose for it all as well.

Have faith in God

            Have faith in God that God is the one who is working in your life. I could say something and it could be completely wrong, however, you should go to the bible and figure it out for yourself. I say the things that I say because I have read the bible and seen for myself that this actually works. Therefore, you should read the bible and see for yourself if these things actually do work too. That way, you’ll know for certain if God wants you there or not.

Tips on where to play

I know that you want to play your gigs very badly and want to share the gospel with people. But patience young grasshopper the gigs will come.

First, you’ll need to build your local following. This can be done easily through a blog or YouTube channel. Just start posting up blog posts and YouTube videos about your music and your local scene and you will start to get followers in your local area.

Labels and artists want to see that you can sell out local shows first before they can sign you anyways so you need to start from the bottom somehow, so get to writing and putting up YouTube videos!

After you’ve built up a following and released some music, people will be asking you to play at their venue and they won’t be bars and nightclubs. They’ll be legitimate venues that pay top dollar for acts!
