Hey everyone! Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to guide us more towards him each day. Ask God to strengthen our hands in work and music. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.
Now back to the show
A guide on how to produce Christian rock tracks
So the interesting thing about Christian music, is that’s it’s one of the only genres if not the only genre that classifies itself based on the lyrics that you put into it.
Hip-hop is classified by slow bass heavy drum beats and fast raps.
Rock is classified by almost zero bass distorted guitars and singing.
And all different types of genres have their own musical differentiation.
But with Christian music, it’s basically the only genre that classifies itself based on the lyrics.
Therefore, as a Christian musician, if you want to produce rock tracks.
It’s important to understand the elements behind the rock song.
Of course I’m not saying to go out and listen to a whole bunch of rock songs that are not Christian.
But rather, go out and listen to rock songs that are Christian and that truly worship God.
After all if you want to get better at Christian music, you need to submerse yourself into Christian music.
You’re not going to get better at Christian rock if you’re listening to secular rock.
So let’s talk about how to produce Christian rock songs.
Know the elements
So rock can be taken two different ways.
There’s soft rock and hard rock.
That’s the way that I like to classify it.
In the genre of soft rock, you often have either acoustic guitars or clean electric guitars maybe a little distortion too but nothing too heavy. With the drums, it’s the almost 90% of the time going to be the standard pocket groove that every drummer needs to know.
AKA the snare on 2 and 4 and the either 8th note hi hats or 16th note hi hats.
BPM is between 80 and 120 BPMS
Bassline is following the guitar roots similarly but of course adding a rhythmic value to the song.
And either clean or screamed vocals as the lyrics.
In heavy rock or hard rock, you will have faster BPMS, Screaming vocals, and really heavy distorted guitars.
Make sure you turn that gain up and make it real crunchy.
Bass is almost non existent, with Metallica completely ignoring their bass lines in their first album.
The lyrics should always be Christian
Every Christian musician should always aim to glorify God with their lyrics.
The purpose of the song isn’t to glorify ourselves, but rather bring glory to God for everything that he’s ever done for us.
So bring glory to God and find new ways to exalt him for there are infinite amount of ways to exalt him for he is infinitely good and beautiful.
And after you know the elements of the song, go out and try and replicate some of your favorite Christian rock songs. This way, you will have practice creating these things.
Take your time to make these replications because all of that practice will benefit you.
Remember this is a long game, so go out and play the long game.
