Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to build a local following.
Let’s talk about this
Why build a local following for your music?
So there are actually many reasons as to why you would want to build a local following for your music first before you go out and try and gain a following nationally or internationally.
The first reason is to prove and test yourself.
What happens is that many record labels will actually want to see that you have sold out in a small area first before actually committing to signing with you.
Actually I would say always, but I’m pretty sure that there is a record label out there that doesn’t do it.
But almost always you’re going to have to sell out in a small area first.
But the test is this, if you can sell out in a small area first, then you can sell out in a large area.
That’s really the test that a lot of record labels look out for.
So when I say sell out, what do I mean?
I mean that you have sold merch, tickets, albums, cd’s, anything to do with your music has to have sold out in a small area first before.
So it boils down to this, It is much more impressive to sell out 5,000 albums in a city than it is to sell out nationally.
It literally means that the larger you expand, the more people are going to buy it.
So that’s the reason why you would want a local following.
On top of that, if you build a local following, your local following is the audience that cares the most about you.
They are the ones that will be there for you and show up the most when it all comes down to the nitty gritty.
So yeah, that’s why you should build a local following first for music.
Here’s how to do it.
How to actually build a local following for your music

So in your social media accounts, it’s important that you tag and put hashtags that follow around your local scene.
So say for example if you’re on X (formerly known as twitter) then it’s important that if you live in the state of California, then you add hashtags such as #California or if you live in Los Angeles tag it like #Los Angeles.
That way people in your local scene will be able to find you and search for you.
If you are a Christian musician and you are trying to make a big impact in your local scene then tag something like, “L.A. Christian musician on the rise.” or something to that affect.
This way, people can actually look you up and you’ll start to develop a following.
Also, write about things in your local scene.
Write about your city or your town. Write about things to do or interesting facts about your locality.
Write about the music scene or the local musicians in the area. This way, people will find your content through a variety of avenues.
Is it difficult to build a following?
No matter what kind of following you’re building, it’s going to be difficult to build it.
Everything good takes time and effort. So take your time and effort to build your following and God will bless you.
Always remember that God is the one that really has the final say in whether or not you’re going to succeed in your blog so confide in God, pray to God, and God will guide your footsteps.
