Musicians are either good at everything or bad at everything

Hey everyone! So today, I wanted to share with you all the fact that I one time heard from an older gentleman and he said to me, “Hey are you a musician?” And I said, “Yes I am.” And he said, “Is it true that musicians are either good at everything or bad at everything?”

I of course said, you know, I kinda have an idea as to where you’re going with this, but I’ll let you know if I ever do anything else. 

But deep down inside I said to myself, “Yes I am good at everything.”

I understand why people say that. 

That musicians are either good at everything or bad at everything. 

It’s because being an 18 year guitar player and singer, the musician has the insane tenacity and power to study really hard. 

It’s the stone cold fact. 

It’s understood that musicians have strength and ability to practice meticulously and perfect something over and over again. 

But that’s something that’s also a reason why people say that musicians are bad at everything. What happens is that as a musician, perfection is the expection that meets the standard, and in most jobs, that’s not necessary. 

As a matter of fact in most jobs, “Good enough” is literally good enough. 

I have had jobs in the past where my managers literally said to me, “German, it does not have to be perfect, don’t stress too much about it!!!!” 

And in my musician head I’m thinking to myself, “But it has to be perfect or else it’s not a good job. 

But that’s the thing is that a lot of jobs need you to improvise along the way, a lot of jobs need you to be able to think on your feet and not just do something rehearsed. 

Which is why they say that musicians are either good at everything or bad at everything. 

It’s because when a musician starts, it’s difficult to pick things up, but once they have it down, they are the master at the craft. 

Which is why I was thinking to myself, “This dude doesn’t have any idea of how perfect I do my jobs.” 

But I also remembered all of the times that I didn’t pick things up quickly because I felt like I needed a whole bunch of practice doing it. 

But I will say that if you want to practice LEARNING, then pick up an instrument

the reason why I say that is because the musician practices learning to a whole new level. 

They practice studying, they practice the art of absorbing information.

Sometimes the information can be complex. 

If you become a great musician, you will become a great learner.
