Musically, what is the purpose of the guitar?

Hey guys! So today, I wanted to share with you all the purpose of the guitar.

Let’s get into it. 

Musically speaking

Of course we all know that the guitar was designed to be used to worship the Lord Jesus with it. 

However, in this sense, we are speaking the musical purpose for the guitar. 

What is the musical purpose of the guitar?

The drums, keys, bass, and guitar serve a unique function inside of a band. 

And the function is to provide a base layer of musical sounds to support the other instruments and voices. 

I know some of you are saying to yourself, “but German, I thought that the purpose of the guitar is to play as fast as possible and show off to people?”

That’s not true. 

Though at times, the guitar can take the lead and play a solo. You will find that a great majority of guitar songs have what’s called chords. 

And chords are essentially just the base layer of sounds in order to harmonize with the lead vocalist. 

Believe it or not, the guitar was mainly meant to support the lead vocalist. 

I know, I know, it’s hard to believe that such an awesome instrument such as the guitar wasn’t meant to take the lead and the spotlight. 

It was meant to be back up to the singer. 

I already explained this in my videos on facebook that guitar is actually a rhythm instrument. 

And that’s what the drums, keys, bass, and guitar form in the band, the rhythm section. 

So, if you are a guitarist and you don’t know your chords, I highly suggest that you go out and learn some new chords and adapt them to your playing styles. 

Because in reality, guitarists should have a wide chord vocabulary. 

Because that entire chord vocabulary will make you a better musician. 

It’s not meant to be speedy Gonzalez all day long. 

In reality, playing a fast solo is great and all, but if you look at the solos that defined a generation, it doesn’t have to be fast at all. 

Pink Floyd regularly played solos that weren’t fast at all. 

Even Slash who is regarded as one of the fastest players to ever live said that speed is really only meant to show raw emotion and aggression. 

In reality you’re supposed to be using slow solos and also speed when needed. 

It’s not that you’re going to be playing fast all day every day. 

All in all that’s really what it takes to be a good guitarist.
