How to Have Faith in Jesus Christ

Faith in Jesus Christ is at the heart of the Christian life. Christianity is not simply about believing that Jesus existed or knowing stories from the Bible. Faith means trusting Jesus Christ, believing His promises, following Him, and placing your life in His hands.

Many Christians struggle with questions about faith. You may believe in Jesus but still experience doubt. You may wonder whether your faith is strong enough. You may want to trust God more but find yourself worrying about the future. You may even pray, “Jesus, help me believe.”

The good news is that having faith in Jesus Christ does not mean that you will never have questions, fears, or difficult moments. Faith grows as you learn who Jesus is and learn to trust Him through every circumstance.

This article explains what Christian faith means, how you can develop greater faith in Jesus, and what you can do when your faith feels weak.

What Does It Mean to Have Faith in Jesus Christ?

The Bible describes faith as confidence in what we hope for and assurance concerning things we cannot see.

Hebrews 11:1 says:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith involves trusting God even when you cannot see everything He is doing.

Having faith in Jesus Christ means believing that Jesus is who He says He is and trusting Him with your life. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, that He rose from the dead, and that salvation comes through Him.

John 3:16 teaches that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life.

Faith, therefore, is more than intellectual agreement. You can know facts about Jesus without actually trusting Him.

Imagine that someone tells you a bridge is strong enough to support you. You might believe that the bridge exists and believe that it was designed correctly. But trusting the bridge means actually walking across it.

Faith in Jesus involves trusting Him rather than merely knowing about Him.

1. Learn Who Jesus Is

One of the best ways to develop faith in Jesus is to learn about Him.

Read the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

These books describe Jesus’ life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection. As you read, pay attention to His character.

Jesus showed compassion toward people who were suffering. He forgave sinners. He welcomed people who were rejected by society. He taught people to love God and love their neighbors.

Jesus also demonstrated authority. He healed the sick, calmed storms, forgave sins, raised the dead, and ultimately rose from the grave.

The more you learn about Jesus, the more you can understand why Christians place their trust in Him.

If you are struggling with faith, start with the question:

Who is Jesus?

Don’t simply ask what Christianity says about Jesus. Open the Bible and examine His life and teachings for yourself.

2. Believe That Jesus Died for Your Sins

The cross is central to Christian faith.

According to the New Testament, Jesus willingly gave His life for sinners.

Romans 5:8 says:

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Christianity teaches that sin separates humanity from God. We cannot make ourselves righteous simply through good works.

The message of the Gospel is that God provided salvation through Jesus Christ.

Jesus took upon Himself the punishment associated with sin and died on the cross. He then rose from the dead.

When you trust Jesus, you are trusting His work rather than believing that you can save yourself.

This changes the foundation of your relationship with God.

Instead of thinking, “I have to become perfect before God will accept me,” you begin to understand that God’s grace comes first.

Faith says:

“Jesus, I trust what You have done for me.”

3. Believe in the Resurrection

Christian faith is centered not only on the death of Jesus but also on His resurrection.

The New Testament teaches that Jesus physically rose from the dead.

The resurrection is important because it demonstrates the victory of Christ over death.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:17 that if Christ had not been raised, Christian faith would be futile.

The resurrection gives Christians hope that death does not have the final word.

When you place your faith in Jesus, you are trusting the One Christians believe conquered death.

That means your faith is ultimately grounded in God’s promise rather than your circumstances.

Your circumstances can change.

Your emotions can change.

Your finances can change.

Your relationships can change.

Your health can change.

But Christians believe that Jesus Christ remains the same.

Hebrews 13:8 says:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

4. Pray and Talk to Jesus

Faith grows through relationship.

Prayer is one of the most important ways Christians develop their relationship with God.

Prayer does not need to be complicated.

You don’t need to use impressive words. You can speak honestly.

You can say:

“Jesus, I believe in You. Help me trust You more.”

You can tell Him what you’re afraid of.

You can tell Him what you’re struggling with.

You can thank Him for what He has done.

You can ask Him for wisdom.

You can confess your sins.

You can ask for strength.

You can pray when you feel close to God and when you feel far away.

Sometimes people think they need to feel spiritually strong before they pray.

The opposite is often true.

Prayer is one of the ways you become stronger in your faith.

5. Read the Bible Regularly

Romans 10:17 says:

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

The Bible helps you understand God’s character and His promises.

If you want to strengthen your faith, develop a regular habit of reading Scripture.

You don’t necessarily need to read dozens of chapters every day.

Start with a manageable amount.

You could read one chapter of the Gospel of John each day.

As you read, ask questions such as:

  • What does this passage teach me about Jesus?
  • What does it teach me about God?
  • What does it teach me about faith?
  • Is there something I need to change?
  • Is there a promise I need to remember?
  • How can I apply this passage to my life?

Reading the Bible isn’t simply about completing a reading plan.

The goal is to know God better.

6. Trust God Even When You Don’t Understand

One of the hardest parts of faith is trusting God when life doesn’t make sense.

You may pray for something and not receive the answer you expected.

You may experience suffering.

You may lose an opportunity.

You may face financial difficulties.

You may experience disappointment.

During these moments, faith can become difficult.

Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches believers to trust in the Lord rather than relying entirely on their own understanding.

Faith does not mean pretending that difficult circumstances aren’t painful.

It means believing that God is still God even when you don’t understand what He is doing.

You can say:

“Lord, I don’t understand this, but I choose to trust You.”

That is an important expression of faith.

7. Don’t Confuse Faith With Feelings

One of the biggest misunderstandings about faith is thinking that you must constantly feel God’s presence.

There will be days when you feel spiritually excited.

There will also be days when you feel nothing.

Your emotions are real, but they are not always reliable indicators of God’s presence.

You may wake up one morning feeling discouraged and wonder whether God is near.

But God’s presence does not depend on your emotional state.

Faith means trusting God’s promises even when your emotions are changing.

A Christian can experience fear and still have faith.

A Christian can experience sadness and still have faith.

A Christian can have questions and still have faith.

A Christian can experience doubt and continue seeking God.

Faith is not the absence of every negative emotion.

Faith is continuing to turn toward Jesus in the middle of those emotions.

8. Bring Your Doubts to Jesus

If you have doubts, don’t be afraid to bring them to God.

The Bible contains examples of people who struggled with questions and uncertainty.

In Mark 9:24, a man said to Jesus:

“I believe; help my unbelief!”

That is a powerful prayer.

You don’t have to pretend that your faith is stronger than it really is.

You can tell Jesus exactly where you are.

“Jesus, I believe, but I’m struggling.”

“Jesus, help me trust You.”

“Jesus, I have questions.”

“Jesus, strengthen my faith.”

Honesty can be part of a genuine relationship with God.

Instead of allowing doubt to drive you away from Jesus, use your questions as an opportunity to seek Him.

Study Scripture. Pray. Talk with mature Christians. Ask honest questions.

Faith can grow through the process of seeking answers.

9. Obey What Jesus Teaches

Faith isn’t merely something you say.

Jesus repeatedly called people to follow Him.

If you believe Jesus is Lord, His teachings should influence how you live.

Jesus taught His followers to love God and love other people.

He taught forgiveness.

He taught humility.

He taught generosity.

He taught compassion.

He taught His followers to pray.

He taught them to care about people who were suffering.

Obedience doesn’t earn salvation. Christians are saved by God’s grace through faith.

But genuine faith produces a changed life.

If you trust Jesus, ask:

“How does Jesus want me to live?”

Then take practical steps to follow Him.

10. Surround Yourself With Other Christians

Faith can become difficult when you try to live the Christian life completely by yourself.

Christians are called to fellowship with other believers.

A healthy church community can provide encouragement, teaching, prayer, accountability, friendship, and opportunities to serve.

Find Christians who genuinely want to follow Jesus.

Spend time studying Scripture together.

Pray together.

Worship together.

Serve other people together.

Encourage one another during difficult seasons.

You don’t need to pretend that everything is perfect.

Healthy Christian community should provide a place where people can grow.

11. Remember What God Has Already Done

When you are facing a difficult season, remember God’s faithfulness.

Throughout the Bible, God’s people repeatedly remembered what God had done.

You can do the same.

Keep a journal of prayers and answered prayers.

Write down Bible verses that encourage you.

Remember moments when God provided for you.

Remember people who encouraged you.

Remember times when you experienced God’s grace.

When you look back, you may recognize things that were difficult to see while you were going through them.

Remembering God’s faithfulness can strengthen your confidence in Him.

12. Have Faith One Day at a Time

Sometimes Christians become overwhelmed because they think they need to have enough faith for their entire future.

You don’t have to figure out everything today.

Trust Jesus today.

Pray today.

Read Scripture today.

Follow Him today.

Tomorrow will bring its own challenges.

Jesus taught His followers not to become consumed with anxiety about tomorrow.

Matthew 6:34 says:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

Faith often looks less like having every answer and more like taking the next step with Jesus.

What If My Faith Feels Very Weak?

You may wonder:

“What if I don’t have enough faith?”

Remember that faith isn’t about impressing God with how strong you are.

The focus of Christian faith is Jesus.

Even when your faith feels small, you can turn toward Him.

Jesus compared faith to a mustard seed in Matthew 17:20, emphasizing that even small faith can have significance.

The important question isn’t simply, “How strong is my faith?”

It is also:

“Who am I putting my faith in?”

A small amount of genuine trust in Jesus is still trust in Jesus.

Continue seeking Him.

Continue praying.

Continue learning.

Continue following Him.

Faith can grow over time.

Faith Is a Relationship of Trust

Ultimately, having faith in Jesus Christ means learning to trust Him.

It means trusting who He is.

It means trusting His promises.

It means trusting His sacrifice on the cross.

It means trusting His resurrection.

It means trusting His grace.

It means following Him when you understand and when you don’t.

Faith doesn’t mean that life will always be easy.

Jesus never promised His followers a life without difficulty.

Instead, He promised to be with His people.

When you experience fear, turn to Jesus.

When you experience doubt, seek Jesus.

When you experience temptation, turn to Jesus.

When you experience success, thank Jesus.

When you experience failure, return to Jesus.

When you don’t understand what God is doing, continue seeking Him.

A Simple Prayer for Greater Faith in Jesus

If you want to grow in your faith, you can pray a simple prayer like this:

“Jesus, I believe in You. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You died for my sins and rose again. Help me trust You more. Strengthen my faith when I am afraid or uncertain. Help me understand Your Word and follow Your teachings. Forgive my sins and help me become more like You. Teach me to trust You with my future, my relationships, my decisions, and my entire life. When my faith is weak, help me remember who You are. I give my life to You. Amen.”

Conclusion

Having faith in Jesus Christ is not about becoming a person who never experiences doubt, fear, sadness, or uncertainty.

Faith is learning to turn toward Jesus in the middle of those experiences.

Learn about Jesus through Scripture. Pray honestly. Trust His promises. Remember His death and resurrection. Follow His teachings. Surround yourself with other believers. Remember God’s faithfulness. And take your walk with Christ one day at a time.

Your faith may grow slowly.

There may be seasons when you feel extremely close to God and seasons when you struggle.

But don’t give up seeking Jesus.

The Christian life begins with faith and continues through faith.

When you don’t know what to do, look to Jesus.

When you are afraid, look to Jesus.

When you have questions, look to Jesus.

And when your faith feels weak, you can pray the words from Mark 9:24:

“I believe; help my unbelief!”

Keep seeking Him, keep trusting Him, and keep walking with Him.
