Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some songwriting topics that you should definitely be talking about in your songs.

Let’s get into it.

Love

In many songwriting books, you will find that a lot of beginner topics for songwriting have to do with love.

And there’s a reason for that.

It’s because Love is something that quite frankly all of us have experience with.

Whether that’s, that we love a friend, a family member, your God, a romantic relationship, or whether we love a set of ideals, topics, a country, we humans are just experienced people of love.

That is how come you see a lot of people writing about love songs in a lot of their music.

Some of the music about love is lustful but in a way that is about their perception of love either way.

But that’s not all, There is nothing more impactful than a great love song.

You might say, “Oh but German in the club you don’t hear that many love songs, you just hear music about the high life and partying all the time.”

I mean even in those songs, you do still hear love being mentioned from time to time.

But I’m going on a tangent right here. Back to focus as to what we as Christian musicians should be focusing on.

And that’s the love of God.

When we’re first starting out writing music for God, we should be aiming to write Godly love songs.

And when I say Godly love songs, I mean songs that show the love of God, How much does God love us? His love is greater than the ocean, he love so much he died for us, he loves, he loves, he loves.

So for this week,I want to give you guys a practice,

Because we know that great pop hits can be written with the I-V-vi-IV chord progression and it’s variants.

What I want you guys to do as a songwriting practice is to write a pop hit using the I-V-vi-IV Chord progression and talk about love. Remember to start your pitches low in the verses and then raise the pitches higher in the chorus.

Pro Tip, if you want a little extra practice doing a more complex topic, make the melodies slow with slow rhythms at the verses, and make the chorus fast with faster rhythms, this will make your song impactful.

Read a book

There actually have been quite a few songs that have been written by people in books.

I believe that one Beatles song Eleanor Rigby was written by someone in a book.

Just recently I heard Slash performing with Myles Kennedy an acoustic set and Slash came forward and said that, that song was written because he picked up a book and drew inspiration from it.

People say that the best songs are written with inspiration.

Some people say that songs are born in adversity and desperation.

Some people say that you don’t really need to work at a song and just write it.

Those people never wrote a song before.

In reality, Music, like much everything else, is something that you need to work on.

I know what you’re saying, “But German, Music is a gift and if you’re a good songwriter, then you’re a good songwrter, you can’t force that?”

Well actually you can do a lot of things to make your songs better to the point where people want to hear them.

Like you could learn Music Theory, Music theory is the basics of all music construction.

All of your songs could have a great foundation if you were to study Music Theory.

You can even learn how to write melodies with Music Theory.

Again, I’m getting off topic.

Read a book, Read a book, Read a book!

Write about visual and sensory based things

So this is a good exercise to do, take an every day object, it could be a cup, a car, a skateboard, it could be the sky, the sun, the sunset, anything, and write about what your senses detect.

Write about Everything, from the sight, sound, taste, touch, hear, everything that you experience.

And what you’ll find is that your lyrics become more poetic.
