Hey everyone! So today I’m going to go over what it means to pitch your music to people. I feel like there’s a big misconception as to how to actually pitch your music to people so I’m going to clear the air and let you know the best way to pitch your music to someone.

Before we get into all of that, let’s have a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. 

At this point in time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for all of the things in our lives.

Pitching your music to people: The wrong way

So oftentimes, people pitch their music the wrong way towards the industry. They send out a letter to the A&R department of a major record label, wait a few weeks, and when they don’t get a response, they send out their music anyways.

Other people will do the same to indie record labels, artists, bands, managers, producers, etc. etc. in hopes that because they’re smaller in operation, the labels and artists will listen to their music. Not knowing that those people get about a thousand other people trying to write songs for them too. 

And then there’s those people who look out for other people who aren’t even on the radar. 

People will look at people who write songs in their area and try and connect with them, and in a way, that’s alright. 

However, I’m about to share with you the right way to pitch your music to record labels, artists, and people in the industry so that way you can get into a Christian record label.

Pitching your music to record labels: The right way

Honestly, I’ve heard of how some people will say that if you want to cut it in the music industry, then don’t pitch your music at all. 

I know this sounds crazy right but hear me out.

You might be thinking to yourself, “German I can pitch my music to Christian music labels because they don’t get that much traction anyways, it’ll be fine.” or how about “German I need a label to get my music career started and that’s all I need.”

And even though Christian music labels might not get as many demos as a major label, they still get inundated with the amount of demos that are sent in.

So…

What happens is that in order for someone to even be heard by a major label A&R representative, they have to already be someone in the music industry. 

I know this sounds kind of crazy, but musicians use major labels to EXPAND their reach. Musicians use major labels as the last part of their career.

That’s usually the end goal, to be on a major label roster. 

However, before they can even expand their reach, they’ve already proven that they can sell albums, tickets, merch, etc. etc. 

They need to already have a following and believe it or not, the following is the big thing.

They’ve already toured in local circuits, and they can sing and write hits. 

And not only that, but I would say that, that artist is making a living already before they signed up with the major label. 

What happens is that the A&R Representative will hear about these people because everyone is talking about them, and then they will look up their songs on YouTube or spotify or even go to one of their shows, and then if the A&R rep likes them, then they will give the okay to sign the artist. 

But…

However, you still can pitch your music to record labels.

You can still pitch your music to record labels, but you still need to be someone in the industry. 

What happens is this, you can try and reach out to an A&R rep through their email or whatever contact info is on the labels website for the A&R department, but you have to start the letter strong, sweet, and to the point. You have to show off who you are and why that person should listen to your music. This is a good example of a great letter.

“Hello! My name is John Smith and I am a musician trying to get on your label’s roster. I have sold 5000 albums this year alone in my area through Apple Music and Spotify. I have toured extensively through the east coast and even been on the “Vans Warped Tour”. I have around 10,000 followers on my blog and another 50,000 subscribers on my YouTube Channel. I currently get around 80,000 views to my blog every single month. And another 100,000 views a month to my YouTube channel. Please contact me back and let’s talk about future business together. Look forward to hearing from you, thank you for listening and have a nice day!”

That’s a good letter. 

An even better way to do it, is to not do it yourself, but get your own lawyer and have him do it for you. This lawyer that I’m talking about is not just any lawyer, it’s an entertainment lawyer. It’s a lawyer that specializes in music and musician rights. 

And what happens is that a lawyer will work with you in order for you to succeed. Even if you have no money, which at this point you probably will have money, your lawyer will say, “John, I believe in you and you won’t pay me a DIME until your album gets signed. And then you’ll owe me a cut.” 

So that’s good news for those musicians who might not have money, the bad news is that lawyers also look to see if you are someone in the industry. Some might want to look at your website. But almost everyone will want to hear your music. 

The same is true for other people on your “team”. If you get your producer or session musician, or even the recording studio some time, they might be able to take your music places unimaginable.
